I’ve always loved vampire movies. It goes back to the first time seeing From Dusk til Dawn and Blade, which were my favorite vampire movies until 30 Days of Night came in 2007. The last few years though have been really something special in the genre. Last Voyage of the Demeter and Nosferatu gave a new look at Dracula, and Abigail gave all of us a whole new originality in vampire stories.
However, with all of those, one stood out more that any. I have watched Sinners probably a dozen times the past year, and each time I am just as struck by the tone of the film. It looks back to a time where the country was deeply divided, especially in the south, and introduces vampires into the mix in a way that both respects the movements of the era and completely rewrites the history as well. Then, it won 4 academy awards too. This is the first movie I’ve agreed with winning the awards in a long time, and I’m sure it will be the last too. Give it a watch on HBO Max, or buy it here on Amazon if you don’t like the ads.
